LIFEBREAD AND UGANDA GO WAY BACK. Dusty's feet first touched African soil in the country of Uganda. Just like a first love, Lifebread has continued to have a strong connection and heart for Uganda. Lifebread currently has 3 ovens at Camp Saaka, in the mountains of western Uganda.
Lifebread also completed its most recent Bakery Project in Fort Portal, Uganda, in July 2010. A team of volunteers from all over the United States spent two weeks in the lush Rwenzori mountains of Uganda, breaking ground and completing a bakery as well as teaching baking classes to local village women.
In May 2011, Lifebread made a short return trip to the ovens in Camp Saaka and in Fort Portal. We took a couple weeks to teach some refresher courses to the group of women in Fort Portal. Some of the women showed a great deal of promise and baking expertise.
Another exciting turn of events came when we heard about a new bakery that was being built outside of Fort Portal in a rural village called Bugunda. Some friends and family of the initial bakery project took the initiative to select a site and hire local labor to build another bakery! This new bakery will include another oil drum oven and will be available for use to anyone in Bugunda who needs it.
