DO YOU KNOW OF SOMEONE WHO COULD BENEFIT FROM A BAKERY PROJECT?
Lifebread conducts bakery projects for a variety of facilities and circumstances. In 2009, 4 ovens were built for an orphanage outside of Nairobi, Kenya. Beginning in 2007, Lifebread began an ongoing relationship with Camp Saaka, a Christian youth camp in the Rwenzori mountains of western Uganda, which hosts 3 of our ovens. This summer, 2010, ovens will be built alongside a brand new church plant in Ft. Portal, Uganda, as part of a self-sustaining co-op in the small village community.
Bakery project sites are selected as follows:
1. Potential sites contact Lifebread throughout the year by email.
2. Lifebread takes a survey trip to visit and learn more about potential sites. A final selection is made based on several factors. The candidate site must have a directed Christian focus which ministers to the local community. It is also imperative that the local economy and geographical location be able to support the materials needed to build ovens and run a bakery program long after Lifebread volunteers have left the scene. (Basically, Lifebread needs to be able to buy oil drums, bricks, and flour.) Lastly, the area must be safe for Lifebread volunteers to carry out the project.
3. Finally, the bakery project is initiated. The team of volunteers arrives at the project site to construct ovens and teach culinary classes, all while furthering the message of Christ.
