Bakery Projects >

You've heard the old saying, "GIVE A MAN A FISH AND HE'LL EAT FOR A DAY; TEACH A MAN TO FISH AND HE'LL EAT FOR A LIFETIME." Take that saying, add an oil drum, a load of bricks, wood for heat, and the know-how to bake fresh bread, and that's Lifebread's take on the proverb.

In this section, you will learn all about the bread and butter (pun intended) of our unique mission: the bakery project. A bakery project is two-fold. It involves the very photogenic, very rustic, tale-worthy experience of building wood-burning, oil-drum ovens from the ground up.

The second part of our bakery project is the actual bakery! We teach the recipients of our new ovens to make breads and anything else bake-able. We also teach them simple food-sanitation skills and bakery management skills. Our next bakery project is coming up in July 2010!

Finally, the aspect of a Lifebread bakery project that makes it unique from any other relief work is the fact that we get to teach and share the love of Jesus wherever we go. This involves teaching Bible classes to foster spiritual development along with street outreach to introduce Christ to those who may never have heard his name or known his life-altering love. A rewarding part of every bakery project is when we get to use the brand new ovens to bake and freely give bread to the marginalized, along with the message of Christ.

The beauty of the bakery project is in its sustainability. The work Lifebread accomplishes on a trip does not come to a screeching halt as soon as the project volunteers have returned stateside. Rather, the ovens built and the skills left behind with the locals creates an ongoing, functioning bakery. Lifebread has working bakery projects in Kenya and Uganda, a total of seven ovens.
